What If You Didn’t Have to Learn AI to Build an Online Business?

Wealthy Affiliate is rebuilding its platform around a provocative idea: instead of forcing entrepreneurs to master more technology, make the technology understand the entrepreneur.

There has probably never been a better time to start an online business.
There has also probably never been a more confusing time to start one.

Don Dixon

You can build a website without knowing how to code. You can research a market in minutes. You can create images, write copy, analyze competitors, edit video, automate email, find keywords, produce social content, build landing pages, and communicate with customers using technology that would have required an entire team not long ago.

That should make entrepreneurship easier. Instead, for many people, it has created a new barrier.

Before you build your business, you are told you need to learn ChatGPT. Then perhaps Claude. Gemini. An image generator. A video generator. WordPress. SEO software. Analytics. Email marketing. Pinterest. YouTube. Instagram. Automation platforms. Prompt engineering. Agents.

Every shortcut seems to arrive with another dashboard. Every answer creates three new questions.

And if you are coming into this world after spending 20, 30, or 40 years becoming good at something else, it is easy to reach the wrong conclusion:

Maybe I missed my chance. Maybe this new AI-powered business world belongs to somebody younger or more technical than me.

I don’t believe that. In fact, I think we are approaching the point where the opposite is true. The next important stage of AI will not be about how much technology you can learn. It will be about how much technology you no longer need to learn before you can put what you already know to work.

That is why I have been paying close attention to what Wealthy Affiliate is building around its new platform and its AI system, Ace. Ace is built to learn your business, then tell you what to work on next.

Because I don’t think the important story is that Wealthy Affiliate is adding AI. Everybody is adding AI. The interesting part is that Wealthy Affiliate appears to be redesigning the process of starting and operating an online business around it.

And those are two very different things.

The Problem Isn’t That We Need More AI

If you have spent any serious time using artificial intelligence, you already know its strange contradiction. AI can dramatically reduce the effort required to complete a task while dramatically increasing the number of decisions available to you.

Ask an AI system to help you start a business, and you can get 20 niche ideas before breakfast.

Wonderful. Which one should you choose?

Ask it how to market the business and you can get SEO, YouTube, TikTok, Pinterest, email, paid advertising, podcasting, communities, short-form video, partnerships, digital products, affiliate marketing, and another dozen options.

Wonderful. Which one should you do first?

An older entrepreneur calmly sitting among dozens of floating AI-generated business ideas and marketing channels.

AI has made answers cheap.

Your judgment has become more valuable.

That distinction matters because most people who struggle to start an online business are not failing because information is unavailable. We are drowning in information. They struggle because they don’t know which information applies to them, which opportunity deserves attention, what should come next, and what they can safely ignore.

The traditional solution has been education.

  • Take a course.
  • Follow the lessons.
  • Learn the terminology.
  • Master the tools.
  • Then apply what you learned.

That model has helped millions of people, including me. But artificial intelligence is creating the possibility of something different.

Instead of teaching every entrepreneur the same process and expecting each person to figure out how it applies to their situation, what if the system first understood the person?

What if it knew what you wanted to build, who you wanted to help, how you wanted to make money, what you had already accomplished, what you were struggling with, and which business you were working on?

Then the question changes.

It is no longer:

What should everybody learn next?

It becomes:

What do you need next?

That is the change Wealthy Affiliate is trying to make.

Wealthy Affiliate Isn’t Just Rebuilding Its Dashboard

Wealthy Affiliate has been around for more than two decades, and much of its identity has been built around training people to create online businesses through websites, content, search traffic, affiliate marketing, and related strategies.

The company is now rebuilding the platform from the ground up. Kyle, Wealthy Affiliate’s co-founder, has described this as replacing roughly 20 years of accumulated code with a new foundation designed for much faster development and a much more interactive, AI-driven environment.

A new interface is the visible part. The deeper change is the operating philosophy behind it.

Historically, you entered a platform like Wealthy Affiliate and worked your way through training. You learned how niches worked. You learned how websites worked. You learned content. You learned traffic. You selected tools and gradually assembled the pieces into a business.

The new model begins moving the center of gravity away from the course and toward the business itself. Your business becomes the organizing principle. Ace sits beside it.

That may sound like a small distinction until you think through the implications.

A course knows what lesson comes after Lesson 7.

An intelligent business environment should know what you should do after Tuesday.

Those are not the same problem.

The rebuild also widens what counts as an online business. A plan can run on a website, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, or all of them. The platform bends to the business, not the other way around.

What Happens If You Don’t Even Know What Business to Start?

This may be where Wealthy Affiliate’s new direction becomes most relevant to beginners.

Today, most business platforms expect you to arrive having already made several important decisions.

  • What is your niche?
  • Who is your customer?
  • What are you selling?
  • Do you need a website?
  • Which marketing channels will you use?
  • How are you monetizing?

For a beginner, those aren’t onboarding questions.

Those are the things they need help figuring out.

Wealthy Affiliate’s planned external version of Ace starts moving that decision-making process to the very beginning.

Instead of arriving at a static homepage that attempts to convince everybody with the same message, visitors will be able to begin a conversation.

  • They can have a business already.
  • They can have an idea.
  • They can have an interest.
  • Or they can have no idea where to begin.

Ace is being designed to guide that conversation toward a potential audience, business direction, publishing channels, monetization approach, and initial game plan.

Think about what that means for someone intimidated by online business.

Tell me what you know.
Tell me what you’re interested in.
Tell me who you’d like to help.
Let’s figure out what we can build from there.

That is a much more human starting point.

The technology becomes the translator between what is inside your head and the business structure you don’t yet know how to create.

I think that is far more interesting than another AI writing tool.

Here’s the catch. A conversation can surface a niche. It can’t tell you whether that niche will still hold your interest in year three, or whether anybody will pay for it. That part is still your call.

It’s the same call I walk people through in The Amazing Niche Master. Use it before you ever set foot on a platform. Then take your Amazing Niche Master results to Ace. Ace can ask more questions. You still have to answer them honestly.

Three-step process: find your niche with The Amazing Niche Master, build the plan with Ace, then make the final call yourself.

The Business Needs a Memory

One of the frustrations of using general-purpose AI for business is context.

The quality of an answer depends heavily on what the AI understands about what you are doing.

  • Who are you helping?
  • What is your positioning?
  • How do you make money?
  • What have you already created?
  • What channels are you using?
  • What is your tone?
  • What are your priorities?
  • What have you deliberately decided not to do?

Without enough context, even a brilliant AI can give you a brilliant answer to the wrong problem.

This is where Wealthy Affiliate’s Hub concept becomes important.

A Hub is positioned as the persistent workspace for a particular business. Within that environment, Ace can understand the business you are working on, the channels connected to it, the content you have created, the business plan, and other activity associated with that specific venture. WA has shown Ace building a Hub around an audience, monetization method, publishing channels, voice, and content direction, then using that context as work continues.

If you operate more than one business, those contexts can be different.

That is exactly how they should be.

The strategy for a YouTube business teaching youth baseball should not bleed into an ecommerce business selling something unrelated. This sounds obvious when humans do it.

For AI to become genuinely useful as a business partner, it has to do it too. The real value of persistent business context isn’t convenience.

It is better judgment.

The more accurately a system understands what you are building, the better chance it has of distinguishing between something you could do and something you should do.

Training Is About to Become Something Else

Kyle made one observation about Wealthy Affiliate’s existing training that I think exposes the entire philosophy behind this rebuild:

“The training does not know YOU.”

A traditional course can’t know you.

  • It doesn’t know whether you completed Lesson 12 but already have ten years of video experience.
  • It doesn’t know whether you hate being on camera.
  • It doesn’t know whether you built three websites before joining.
  • It doesn’t know whether your business depends on Pinterest rather than Google.
  • It doesn’t know that the task you are struggling with right now isn’t covered until three modules later.

A course has a sequence.

A person has circumstances.

Wealthy Affiliate’s proposed answer is not to eliminate education. It is to make education contextual.

  • If I am working on SEO and encounter a problem, teach me the relevant SEO concept now.
  • If I am creating my first YouTube channel, teach me what matters for that stage.
  • If I don’t understand why Ace is recommending a particular action, explain the reasoning.

Then go one step further.

Help me perform the action.

WA describes this as a hybrid between training and tools: education tied directly to what the member is doing, with the ability to move from learning about something into building it within the same environment.

That changes the relationship between learning and doing.

Infographic titled "The Model Is Changing." The old model is five steps (learn, remember, translate, find the tool, implement) on a winding mountain road marked by signs for tools, tutorials, distractions and delay. The emerging model is three steps (encounter the problem, understand it, act on it) on a straight road toward a sunrise and a sign reading "Progress."

The old model is:

Learn → remember → translate → find the tool → implement.

The emerging model is:

Encounter the problem → understand it → act on it.

Education becomes embedded inside execution.

I believe that concept reaches far beyond Wealthy Affiliate.

For decades, software has forced humans to learn how the software works.

  • Menus
  • Commands
  • Workflows
  • Terminology
  • Documentation
  • Tutorials

AI creates the possibility of reversing that relationship. I explain what I am trying to accomplish. The system figures out which capabilities are required. That is when AI stops being another subject I need to study and starts becoming leverage.

Then We Get to Agents

“Agentic AI” sounds considerably more intimidating than it needs to. Strip away the terminology and the idea is simple.

Most of us began using AI one task at a time.

  • Write this email.
  • Give me ten ideas.
  • Research this topic.
  • Create this image.
  • Summarize this document.

Each exchange produces an output.

An agentic system can take a larger objective, determine that several connected actions are required, and work through those actions as a coordinated process.

Wealthy Affiliate has used article production as one example.

Instead of asking AI only to write an article, imagine a workflow that builds the article, creates the supporting images, identifies appropriate affiliate links, finds relevant pages already on your website for internal linking, integrates those elements, and prepares the finished content for publication.

The important advancement isn’t that AI can write more words. I don’t need more words. The Internet doesn’t need more words. The advancement is that separate pieces of work can become one coherent workflow.

Today, building an online business often means becoming the human connection between a collection of disconnected tools.

  • You take the research from one place and move it into another.
  • You create an image somewhere else.
  • You log into WordPress.
  • You find your affiliate link.
  • You check another tool.
  • You return to the article.
  • You open analytics.
  • You create social content.

And in between every one of those steps:

  • Copy
  • Paste
  • Export
  • Import
  • Upload
  • Format
  • Repeat

None of those activities necessarily represents the entrepreneur’s highest-value contribution. They’re plumbing. Agents have the potential to handle more of the plumbing. That leaves the human with the part I don’t want surrendered: deciding what deserves to exist.

AI Should Not Remove You From Your Own Business

This is where some people become uncomfortable.

If AI can research, write, design, analyze, publish, recommend, and coordinate, what exactly am I doing?

That is the wrong question.

A calculator can perform arithmetic better than I can. I still decide what deserves to be calculated.

A GPS can calculate the route. I still decide where I am going.

The danger isn’t using tools that are more capable. The danger is surrendering judgment because the tool is capable.

Wealthy Affiliate has emphasized that its proposed agentic workflows are intended to keep the member in control, with opportunities to review plans, see what the system is doing, refine outputs, and approve the direction rather than sending work into an invisible automation pipeline.

That distinction has to survive contact with the finished product.

I don’t want AI to become me.

I don’t want it deciding what I believe, what my standards are, which audience I care about, where I draw ethical lines, what experience I bring to the subject, or what kind of business I want to own.

I want it to eliminate unnecessary friction between an idea and its execution.

  • The entrepreneur still needs a point of view.
  • The entrepreneur still has to recognize when something is wrong.
  • The entrepreneur still owns the consequences.

You do not need AI to become the entrepreneur. You need AI to help you become a more capable one.

The Most Important Job for Ace May Be Saying “Not Yet”

I can ask AI for 100 things I could do to grow a business. That is not difficult anymore. What I need is help deciding which three deserve my attention. And perhaps which 97 should be ignored.

Kyle has talked about Ace providing a bird’s-eye view of the business and helping determine priorities rather than presenting members with an enormous list of possible tasks.

Entrepreneurs rarely run out of things to do. We run out of time, attention, energy and money while doing the wrong things.

A desk of faded sticky notes with one note in sharp focus, circled as the task that matters next.

A beginner is particularly vulnerable because everything looks important when you don’t yet know what matters.

  • Logo
  • TikTok
  • Email sequence
  • Business cards
  • Lead magnet
  • Brand colors

Some of these can matter. They rarely matter equally, and they certainly don’t matter simultaneously. The best business assistant isn’t the one that generates the longest task list. It is the one that understands enough about the objective to say:

This is what matters next.

And equally important:

You don’t need to worry about that yet.

That is where artificial intelligence could reduce overwhelm rather than amplify it.

This Still Has to Work

I am deliberately using words like vision, direction, intended, and could.

Because those words matter.

As of early September, Wealthy Affiliate was targeting an initial release in early October 2026, with the first version described as an MVP that will keep evolving rapidly.

A vision is not the same thing as a finished product.

The test comes next.

  • Can Ace understand enough context to make better recommendations instead of simply producing convincing ones?
  • Can it preserve the member’s voice rather than smoothing everyone into the same AI-generated style?
  • Can it recognize when human expertise should override its recommendation?

Those are harder problems than generating an article.

They are also the problems worth solving.

I am far more interested in an AI system that improves decisions than one that simply increases output. Volume is cheap now. Direction isn’t.

This Is Why I Think Beginners Should Pay Attention

If you are considering an online business and AI intimidates you, I don’t think your goal should be to become an expert in every AI platform. I use AI extensively, and I still don’t believe that is the goal. Your real advantage is somewhere else.

It is in the things you know.

  • The work you have done.
  • The mistakes you have survived.
  • The people you understand.
  • The questions you can answer because you lived the answer.

AI didn’t create any of that. You did.

Mine is more than 30 years in sales, marketing, customer service, operations, training and website development. No chatbot handed me that. Yours didn’t come from one either.

The opportunity is to build a system around that knowledge without requiring you to personally become a copywriter, programmer, designer, SEO specialist, data analyst, video editor, prompt engineer, automation architect and social-media expert before you can begin.

That is what I find compelling about the direction Wealthy Affiliate is taking.

The interesting question is whether Wealthy Affiliate can make the intelligence disappear into the experience of building the business.

If it can, you won’t need to spend your time wondering:

How do I use AI?

You will spend more of it answering a much better question:

What am I trying to accomplish?

Start before the platform.

Before you hand anything to Ace, find your Starting Niche. The Amazing Niche Master takes what you already know and tests it against the real market. You don’t need a niche idea. You need honest answers.
