Blogging Fails at the First Opportunity
Blogging is a very appealing venture, but the truth is, that 95% of blogs struggle to make a lasting impact. The primary reason is picking the wrong niche. Bloggers often jump into topics they’re passionate about without considering market demand and competition. It’s like opening a restaurant without knowing what food people want and having hundreds already offering something similar. I have 5 Chinese food restaurants a mile and a half from my house, three are failing, one is ignored, and one has everyone. This scenario is typical in life and blogging.
Banana Tacos
In a crowded blogosphere, standing out is crucial. It’s not enough to write about what you love. There must be a balance between your interests and what people are searching for. Sure, you love Banana Tacos and make the best Banana Tacos in the world. How many people are looking for them? Not considering this will lead you down the path of ruin.
Direction is another big hurdle. Without a clear vision and objectives, blogs can meander, leading to inconsistent content and messaging that confuses readers. Your blog should have a purpose beyond mere expression; it should offer something unique or valuable to your audience.
Understanding and reaching your target audience is everything. You might have great content, but if it’s not speaking to the right people, it goes unnoticed. Identifying who your ideal readers are and what they need can help tailor your content to meet their expectations.
Building a successful blog goes beyond writing content.
It requires
- strategic planning
- a deep understanding of your target audience
- insight into the marketplace you’re entering.
Without these elements, your blog is at risk of failure. Setting Points helps you avoid these common pitfalls by guiding you through niche selection, audience targeting, and market analysis, giving you the foundation needed to grow your blog into a reputable and successful platform. Within this blog, there is a topic for just about everything. If you have a question, feel free to ask.

The Top 2 Reasons 95% Of Blogs Fail Are Eliminated
What’s the biggest obstacle you’ve faced in your blogging journey, and do I have a solution for your obstacle?
Don
Hello,
This post is such a goldmine for anyone serious about blogging! The focus on niche selection as the cornerstone of success is spot on—so many blogs fail simply because they do not take this step seriously. I love how Setting Points offers a clear, structured process to help navigate the maze of blogging, from choosing a niche to targeting the right audience and even monetising effectively.
The comparison with the restaurant example really drives the point home.
Thanks for breaking it down so well, this is a must-read for every aspiring blogger!
I appreciate your input. You will find that my entire site is about mastering niche blogging.
The most important first step is Niche Selection. There are way too many 1001 Perfectly Profitable Passive Income niche lists out there to set you off on the wrong path. I hope that hasn’t happened to you!
Let me know if I can assist you with your niche.
Another challenge that people have is getting traffic.
I have a 3 part series that walks you through leveraging social media for traffic. This makes further use of the restaurant analogy.

Hi Don,
Your comparison of blogging niches to Chinese restaurants struck a chord with me, it’s such a vivid way to illustrate the importance of strategic positioning! I’m particularly intrigued by your mention of the “Amazing Niche Master Process” and how it balances personal passion with market demand. I’m curious though, in your experience, what’s the biggest mistake you see passionate bloggers make when they’re implementing market research?
Is it that they’re not diving deep enough into the data, or perhaps they’re misinterpreting the signals of market demand?
Your point about ‘Banana Tacos’ made me laugh but also think, that sometimes the most unique niches can be profitable if positioned correctly.
Would love to hear your thoughts on how to evaluate whether a highly specific niche is too niche versus potentially being an untapped opportunity?
Thanks for sharing these insights, especially the reminder that we need to be in that 5% club from the start!
Eric
Eric, Thank you for taking the time to read this post and comment. For an in-depth look at The Amazing Niche Master Process that I have created to eliminate The #1 Reason for Blog Failure (Poor Niche Selection) check out this post (https://settingpoints.com/the-…).
The biggest mistake that passionate bloggers make is not in research. When the numbers suggest that a niche is good and lacks “coverage”, they jump in with both feet. It is what they are taught. My last step is what I call “The Eye Test”. This is nothing more than putting your niche on the Google Test. What do the actual search results show about your niche? Sometimes it is the common sense things that we forget in our haste to make our mark on the blogosphere.
Google would have shown you that The Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, and The Cleveland Center for Disease Control are sitting on your keywords. Your blog won’t make a dent in that lineup. You need to dig deeper.
There are times when you dig deeper, you need to ask, “Did I dig too deep?” It is a valid question. My answer to that is “Can You Monetize” where you are? If you can, you did not dig too deep, too niche.
This becomes your unique You Do You niche. I am a firm believer that any niche can be profitable if you do the research. Something as obscure as Pole Dancing can be quite lucrative.
I have eliminated the Top 2 Reasons for Blogging Failure. Poor Niche Selection and Lack of Focus in Content Creation. Check out https://settingpoints.com/the-…
I have you squarely in the Top 5%!
